FAQ

What is the first thing to do after the fire has been extinguished?

After the first responders have extinguished the fire, your first priority is to ensure that everyone in your family, including pets, are safe and accounted for. The next thing is to call us immediately to assess your property and begin a restoration plan.

How long does it take MitiServe to clean up after fire damage?

While every situation is different, the amount of time it takes to clean fire damage depends on the extent of the damage, how many rooms the fire spread to, and other factors. We’ll clean as quickly and efficiently as we can, which typically requires between a few days to a few weeks to complete the job.

Am I allowed to inspect my home and belongings after fire damage?

It is strongly advised to avoid re-entering your home following a fire. Beyond the concerns of smoke inhalation, fire and smoke can weaken a home’s structure substantially, risking collapse.

If I want to try and clean it up myself, is this a good idea?

We recommend that you hire our professional team to clean up fire and smoke residue rather than cleaning it yourself. Smoke is dangerous to inhale, and our team has the proper equipment and expertise to adequately handle the damage.

How much does mold remediation cost?

Each project is different. Cost largely depends on the size of the area, material affected, and how long it will take to remove the contamination. Typical remediation jobs range anywhere from $1,000 to $9,000. However, these costs can soar depending on the complexity of the project.

What are some of the top safety concerns after a fire?

After a fire, the main concerns are the structural integrity of the home and the smoke residue. When a fire burns, it melts building materials and can create toxic fumes that linger within the property.

What are the primary items that I need to keep in my possession?

If you were able to grab any belongings while evacuating your home and they are undamaged, keep them with you.

What do you recommend regarding keeping track of non-restorable items?

Part of our assessment process includes creating an inventory of each item that we recover from the scene. From there, we assess each item’s condition and decide what can be restored and what must be disposed of. Everything will be accounted for and documented.

What about special items? Artwork, china, heirlooms, etc.?

If you have special items that were left behind in your home, simply let us know. We will diligently search for them, assess each item, and restore them when possible.

Who is responsible for paying for the service?

The property owner is responsible for paying for the service, but we recommend that you contact your insurance company as soon as possible after the incident to review your coverage options. Many times the homeowner only has to pay the deductible.

Should I file a claim with my insurance company?

Whether or not you file an insurance claim is totally up to you. Discuss your options with your insurance agent to see if it’s practical based on the estimate and your coverage.

Does MitiServe communicate with my insurance adjuster?

If you would like us to speak with your adjuster, we are more than happy to do so. Just let us know.

What if my house has asbestos, lead or mold?

We are certified to handle substances like asbestos and lead based on our training. However, if we are not 100% comfortable with something, we will call in colleagues who can safely manage the situation.

What if as a result of extensive damage I would want to upgrade or remodel my house?

If this ordeal has created an opportunity for you to do the upgrade or remodel you’ve always wanted, then we can help. However, keep in mind that if your plans are extensive, you may need to hire an additional contractor.

What are some common side effects of water damage?

Water can cause additional damage to a property the longer it sits. It can saturate and deteriorate possessions and building materials, and lead to mold growth. Acting fast is imperative when it comes to water damage.

What does water damage restoration process involve?

The first thing we do is clean up all standing water that is still present in the property. Next, we assess the damage. We determine what can be salvaged and what needs to be disposed of, then make sure the area is dried and dehumidified. Staying ahead of mold growth is something we prioritize with water damage restoration.

How does water damage restoration process work?

When dealing with water damage, we work tirelessly with our skills and advanced equipment to make sure every ounce of water is cleaned up, ruined materials are removed, and the potential for mold growth is diminished.

How much does it cost to fix water damage on average?

The cost of water damage restoration will vary based on the type of water and the extent of the damage. We will be able to give you a more specific estimate after we assess the property.

What are the major causes of water damage?

Water damage can be caused by many different things: appliance leaks, burst pipes, plumbing leaks, flooding from natural disasters, and more.

Can water damage be hidden? If so, what are the signs?

Water damage can absolutely be hidden. You should always be on the lookout for water spots, a pungent odor of mildew, or visible signs of mold.

How do I know if there is mold in my home or business?

Mold spores are everywhere, indoors and outdoors. A person’s health can become compromised when mold levels indoors are greater than levels outdoors. If you think there is mold in your home, call MitiServe at 870-743-6607 today.

Do you offer mold assessments?

Although we do offer mold inspections, we focus on the actual remediation of the mold. Complex investigations will be referred to an Independent Environmental Professional.

Can I remove mold myself?

Mold remediation is not a “do it yourself” task. It requires professional chemicals, equipment, processes, and training. Improper remediation can cause the spread of microbial contaminants to other parts of the structure creating a more complex and costly process down the road. MitiServe’s technicians are IICRC certified in Microbial Remediation and follow the IICRC S-520 (Standards and Reference Guide for Mold Remediation).

Why is there mold in my attic or crawlspace?

The most common causes of mold in attics and crawlspaces are a lack of proper ventilation and the intrusion of moisture of some sort.

Does bleach kill mold?

Bleach is only effective on hard, non-porous surfaces such as countertops. Mold remediation involves the need to sanitize wood and other porous building materials. On materials such as these, bleach will only visibly kill mold and will usually reappear in a matter of days.

Can the mold in my home make me sick?

Molds spores can cause serious health problems. Inhaling, ingesting or touching both non-viable and dormant molds can make a mold-sensitive person ill. However, MitiServe Restoration recommends you discuss the situation with a healthcare professional to determine if your situation is causing you symptoms.
